My wife and I went with a couple of friends to see John Reuben, Bleach, and Number One Gun in concert on Wednesday the 25th. These are all Christian bands. John Reuben is rap, and Bleach and Number One Gun are (I guess you'd say) alternative rock.
If you've never been to a Christian concert, they're an interesting thing (I'm talking about bands who perform "real music" and just happen to be Christians, not that saccharine Sandi Patty or cheesy Carman stuff). The music is just as good as from any secular group, but the venues they play are tiny.
This one took place in bustling Atoka, Oklahoma in a converted roller-skating rink. Not even a very big skating rink at that. Plus, they'd partitioned about a third of the place off into a sort of lobby area. Didn't much matter, though, because when bands like these perform in rural Oklahoma, they don't draw too much of a crowd.
We used to go to a lot of Christian concerts, but this is the first one we've been to in quite a while. This was really brought to my attention when at a staggering 5'8" I towered over most attendees, and even the adults assumed I was a chaperone. Admittedly, at 28 I was even kind of playing the part. I thought the music was too loud, and I was concerned about kids getting tampled in the mosh pit.
And by the way: a mosh pit!?! Rap and pop rock don't really call for that kind of behavior. I saw one little red-headed kid get knocked down, stepped on and squashed by several people before he got helped to his feet with a lens missing from his broken glasses. I swear, kids these days'll take any opportunity to get rowdy. See? I'm old.
...then again, I'd have probably said the same thing 10 years ago. I've never been much of a rebel.
At least you were thought of as one of the chaperones and not one of the throngs of thirteen year olds like me. I'm getting old, too.
